| Summary: | "God makes all things work together for good" (Rom 8:28)… "even sins" (etiam peccata). The addition of these two words has long been attributed to Saint Augustine. In fact, the use of the expression etiam peccata dates back to the Middle Ages. The Hipponate, however, has often presented a way of putting sins to good use: God is good and powerful enough to make good even out of sins, mainly because of the humility acquired by the sinner and by other men, who witness the sin and its penalty. « Dieu fait tout concourir au bien » (Rm 8,28)… « même les péchés » (etiam peccata). L’ajout de ces deux mots a longtemps été attribué à saint Augustin. En réalité, c’est au Moyen Âge qu’apparaît un tel usage de l’expression etiam peccata. L’Hipponate a cependant souvent présenté une mise à profit des péchés : Dieu est assez bon et puissant pour faire un bien même à partir des péchés, principalement du fait de l’humilité acquise par le pécheur et par les autres hommes, témoins du péché et de sa peine. |
