| Summary: | The Handbook of the Vulgate Bible and its Reception offers a comprehensive account of Vulgate research over the last two centuries (ca. 1820–2023) in the form of a thematically arranged annotated bibliography of more than 4000 titles. The work contains explanatory introductions, excerpts of relevant texts from Jerome’s work (generally in translation, but also in Latin), and chronological tables. Of particular note are the annotated alphabetical glossary of linguistic and stylistic terms (pp. 89–126), the glossary of the Latin vocabulary of the Vulgate (pp. 382–472), and the notes on individual biblical texts from Genesis to the book of Revelation and the appendices of the Vulgate (pp. 511–723). The final section is devoted to the cultural impact of the Vulgate in the church, in language, literature, and art, with particular attention to evidence from English, German, French, and Italian literatures and languages. Indexes of names and subjects as well as a detailed table of contents conclude the work. Das Handbuch der Vulgata und ihrer Rezeption bietet einen umfassenden Bericht über die Vulgata-Forschung der letzten beiden Jahrhunderte (ca. 1820–2023) in der Form einer thematisch angelegten kommentierten Bibliographie von mehr als 4000 Titeln. Das Werk enthält erklärende Einleitungen, Auszüge einschlägiger Texte aus dem Werk des Hieronymus (generell in Übersetzung, aber auch auf Latein) und Zeittafeln. Besondere Beachtung verdienen das kommentierte alphabetische Glossar linguistischer und stilistischer Begriffe (S. 89–126), das Glossar zum lateinischen Wortschatz der Vulgata (S. 382–472) und die Anmerkungen zu einzelnen Bibeltexten von der Genesis bis zum Buch der Offenbarung sowie den Anhängen der Vulgata (S. 511–723). Der Schlussabschnitt ist der kulturellen Ausstrahlung der Vulgata in Kirche, Sprache, Literatur und Kunst gewidmet, wobei Zeugnissen aus der englischen, deutschen, französischen und italienischen Literatur und Sprache besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird. Register der Namen und Sachen sowie ein ausführliches Inhaltsverzeichnis schließen das Werk ab. |
