Summary: | My life draws near to the underworld? (Psalm 88:4) is a unique expression within the Old Testament. What does this sentence mean in a culture without travels to the world beyond, nor descents into the underworld like in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and certainly no hell like most of the Christian religion? This contribution provides an overview of the Old Testament ideas of the underworld by referring to their cosmological (localization of the underworld: Job?38; Milieu of the underworld: Isaiah 14) and anthropological aspects (proximity to the underworld: lamentations of the individual; Salvation from the underworld: songs of thanksgiving of the Individual). |
