Σύνοψη: | The article deals with the question, whether Christian theology could or should be conceived as a discipline in cultural studies. First, it shows that theologians around 1900 had no problem with adapting this view of theology. In spite of strong methodical differences they agreed that theology has to show the cultural impact of Christianity. Secondly, the article briefly outlines some concepts of cultural studies that have played a significant role in the discussion after 1970. Finally, it presents some current theological reflections on how to understand theology as a cultural study. Major concerns of protestant theology such as a Christian concept of God, the foundation of human freedom in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the relation of the study of theology to church management must not be ignored when theology is conceived as a cultural study. To conceive theology as a cultural study can contribute towards formulating a more adequate concept of cultural studies in the current debate. |
