Mallowan's marshes: the archaeology of the Balikh Valley under Roman and Byzantine rule
This article considers the archaeological and textual evidence for the Balikh Valley during Roman and Byzantine rule. I focus on settlement patterns, demography, and economy, and demonstrate that the Valley fol - lowed a distinct trajectory when compared to western and southern Syria.

Der Beitrag untersucht archäologische Zeugnisse und historische Quellen römischer und byzantinischer Herrschaft im Bereich des Balikh-Tals. Die Analyse fokussiert auf Siedlungsstrukturen sowie der Demographie und Ökonomie der Region und zeigt, dass das Balikh-Tal in dieser Periode im Vergleich mit Regionen West- und Südsyriens eine deutlich unterschiedliche Entwicklung aufweist. |
