| Summary: | Abstract: The phrase ישב הכרבים is attested seven times in the Hebrew Bible as an epithet of Yhwh. Its precise meaning is unclear. Six existing interpretations are identified, each of which is influenced by a different biblical passage or group of passages mentioning cherubim: of these, »who is seated upon the cherubim« prevails in modern scholarship. The prevailing interpretation, along with four of the others, is rejected on grammatical grounds. The remaining interpretation, »the occupant of the cherubim«, is correct in principle but not in execution. The phrase is properly rendered as »who dwells among the cherubim«; it refers pri-marily to the cherubim of the Edenic realm; and it serves to extol Yhwh’s transcendence, much like יושב בשמים and other biblical expressions. Résumé: L’expression ישב הכרבים, dont la signification exacte demeure inconnue, est attestée à sept reprises comme attribut de Yhwh dans la Bible hébraïque. Il en existe six interprétations, chacune d’entre elles étant influencée par référence à un passage (ou groupe de passages) différent(s) mentionnant les Chérubîm, notamment celui de »siégeant sur les Chérubîm«, qui prévaut dans la recherche contemporaine. Cette interprétation dominante, ainsi que quatre autres, sont rejetées pour des raisons grammaticales. L’explication restante, celle de: »l’occupant des Chérubîm«, est correcte, mais nécessite une explication. La meilleure traduction de l’expression est: »qui réside parmi les Chérubîm«; elle se réfère au monde édénique et vise à exalter la transcendance de Yhwh, tout comcomme יושב בשמים et d’autres expressions bibliques. Zusammenfassung: Der Ausdruck ישב הכרבים ist siebenmal als Attribut Jhwhs in der Hebräischen Bibel bezeugt. Seine exakte Bedeutung ist unsicher. Sechs bestehende Deutungen werden unterschieden, von denen jede durch einen anderen biblischen Referenztext zu Cherubim, beziehungsweise einer Gruppe davon, bestimmt ist. In der modernen Exegese hat sich die Deutung als »der auf den Cheruben thront« durchgesetzt. Neben vier anderen Interpretationen wird diese aus grammatischen Gründen zurückgewiesen. Die verbleibende Deutung »der Insasse der Cherubim« ist prinzipiell richtig, bedarf jedoch einer Ausführung. Die Wendung ist angemessen mit »der inmitten der Cherubim wohnt« wiederzugeben. Dies bezieht sich vor allem auf die Cherubim im Gefilde von Eden, und dient dazu, Jhwhs Transzendenz herauszuheben, wie auch יושב בשמים und andere biblische Wendungen. |
