| Sumario: | In light of Amīn Fikrī’s biography and the composition of his journey to Europe, Iršād al-alibbā ilā maḥāsin Ūrūbbā (The Guide for Enlightened Minds to the sights of Europe), this article is an attempt to explain the circumstances of his visit to the World Exhibition of 1889 in Paris and to contextualize his description of the Rue du Caire. This passage was made the object of a famous comment at the opening chapter of Colonising Egypt. As famous as tendentious in fact. The analysis proposed in our article demonstrates that the mistranslations and extrapolations of this comment, made without any effort of contextualization, led Timothy Mitchell to a misinterpretation which nevertheless became an authorized vulgate since 1991. |
