Resumo:We are currently witnessing theory-building on synodality in the Roman Catholic Church. From the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has promoted a theology and pastoral praxis of synodality based on the understanding of the Church as the journeying people of God with its unerring sensus fidei under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. An important source of inspiration for the pope is Ignatian spirituality with its emphasis on common apostolic discernment, which may be translated as synodal missionary journeying. Various synods of bishops, as well as the work of the International Theological Commission, have provided a space to explore and practice this emerging ecclesiology at the level of the Magisterium. The upcoming synod of bishops, 'For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission' (2022), will provide a stimulus among theologians and in pastoral circles to unfold the idea of synodality so as to allow it to grow into a praxis at various levels in the Church.
