Summary: | Responding to the requests of two synodal assemblies, Pope Francis opened the instituted ministries of the reader and acolyte to women, which had previously been reserved for men. This provision sees the baptismal priesthood as the centerpiece of a ministry destined to interact, in specific and sometimes supplementary areas, with the ordained priesthood. Rather than a point of arrival, Francis’ reform will signal the departure of Paul VI’s reform, which, though welcomed by candidates for the priesthood, was inexplicably disregarded by lay candidates. With the qualified liturgical service of the Word and Eucharist, lectors and instituted acolytes will henceforth have an ecclesial qualification for charitable services as well. |
