Being part of Russia since the 17th century, they represent an important component of the mosaic of peoples, languages and religions living in this country. A special process of mutual enrichment has led to the development of a Buddhist culture, in which Russian Orthodox influence can often be discovered. In this sense, the Kalmyks are a true “Eurasian” people. But above all, in the interaction between Orthodox Christians and Muslims in the North Caucasus, they constitute an element that helps to stabilize these relations.
