Description
Summary:Many different interpretations of Mark 1,13 are offered in the exegetical discussion. The main controversial issue is whether an Adam/Paradise-typology is adequate or not? This article proposes a hermeneutical approach and analyses different interpretations, their arguments, and asks if a well-founded decision focusing merely on the text is possible at all. The article also reflects on the character and the problems of exegetical work in general. Mark 1.13 offers definite arguments neither for the Adam-hypothesis nor against it. Instead it is plurivalent with regard to possible interpretations. In this context, the interpreting subject plays an important role. The situation is further complicated by the lack of clarity concerning methods and criteria used by exegetes, and by the lack of a generally accepted hierarchy of arguments. Nonetheless, the author contributes his own pieces to the exegetical puzzle described.
